Lesson 5: Self-Control, Not Remote Control

Research shows that sense of internal control is an important factor in resilient children, and that three of the best ways to exercise self-control are to (1) express your feelings directly to the other person(s) involved (2) laugh about the situation and (3) step away from the situation until you cool off.

Students will be able to:

  • Identify triggers (external and internal self-talk) that arouse angry responses.

  • Identify warning signals (physical sensations) that indicate the presence of and level of angry feelings.

  • Differentiate between angry feelings and aggressive actions.

  • Demonstrate ways to handle angry feelings with self-control.
